في ما يتجاوز المنظور التوحيدي للظاهرة الإسلامية الذي ينحو نحو التوحيد والتنميط وبما يختزل الإسلام في إسلام واحد معياري متعالٍ على السيرورة التاريخية، تقوم الدراسة التي بين أيديكم بتناول تحوّلات الظاهرة الإسلامية، الثرية جداً في إمتدادها التاريخي والجغرافي، على ضوء مناهج علم الإجتماع وبما يكشف النقاب عن وجه الإسلام الحضاري والثقافي الفعلي، أو بالأحرى تلك الإسلامات المتعدّدة، بما أن الإسلام كأي دين من الأديان، يستمد ملامحه من الظروف الموضوعية المحايثة به ومن ملامح الفئات الإجتماعية التي تمثّله.
وقد اختار المؤلّفان، من ضمن آفاق البحث الشاسعة في الإسلام المتعدّد، أن يهتمّا بالإسلام في عصور الإنحطاط، كونه بقي من جهة أولى غائباً عن إهتمام المؤرخين والدارسين المطلوب، وظل ضائعاً من جهة أخرى بين عصر ذهبي آفل وعصر نهضوي منشود.
فنظرا في المحركات التاريخية التي شكلت مسار الإنحطاط في الثقافة الإسلامية، وأهمّها تعمّق الإنقطاع بين الإسلام العالِم كما أنتجه العلماء وسجلّته المدوّنات وحرسته المؤسسة الدينية الرسمية، بإختصار: إسلام النص، وبين الإسلام المعيش أو التديِّن الشعبي بمختلف تشكّلاته وتمظهراته المحسوسة من مسلكية أخلاقية وطُرق صوفية ومعتقدات خرافية وإنحرافات وبدع استشرت في الأوساط الشعبية، فطبعت عصور الإنحطاط بطابعها وشكّلت خير دليل على مقولة القائلين بالإنتقال من إسلام الرسالة إلى إسلام التاريخ.
