عندما أصدر تيد هيوز (1930- 1998) كتابه الأخير "رسائل عيد الميلاد" لم يكن أحد يتوقّع حدثاً بهذه الجسامة، له هذا الوقع المثير، وبهذه الصراحة في كشف أسرار علاقته بسيلفيا بلات، الشاعرة الأميركية التي تزوجها في 1956، والتي انتحرت في 1963، خصوصاً أن هيوز عاش سنواته الأخيرة في عزلة تكاد تكون شبه كاملة، مصرّاً على الصمت في كل ما يتعلّق بحياته، وتفاصيلها الحميمة.
ولم يسبق لشاعر إنكليزي آخر أن هزّ عالم الأدب بهذه القوة وبهذا الحسّ الفضائحي منذ أن نشر اللورد بايرون ملحمته الشهيرة "تشيل هارولد" في سنة 1812، كما نشر قبلة دراسة تصوّفية ضخمة تستقصي أسرار عالم شكسبير الشعري بعنوان "شكسبير وربّة الكينونة الكاملة".
وكل هذه الأعمال أنجزها هيوز على مدى السنوات الأخيرة من عمره، في دفق متواصل هائل من العطاء كأنّه كان يحس بإقتراب النهاية.
استغرقت كتابة "رسائل عيد الميلاد" أكثر من ربع قرن، وصبّ هيوز كلّ ما جمعه في كتبه المبكرة من خبرة بالطبيعة وتجليّاتها، وباللغة الملغّزة وما تستطيع أن توحي به من أبعاد، في هذا الكتاب، الذ يعتبر بحق تحفته المتكاملة، وتتويجاً لكل ما سبقه من تجارب إنسانيّة وشعرية، "يعيش" الشاعر كل شيء مرّة أخرى: من أول لقائه بسيلفيا بلات حتى موتها، مروراً بالرحلات التي قاما بها في كل من فرنسا وإسبانيا وأميركا، والزيارات إلى "شارات" ومرتفعات وذرينغ، واللحظات الحميمة والمرعبة التي عاشاها معاً سواء في الواقع أو الحلم.
هنا، في هذا الكتاب، تتواشج حياتهما في نسيج واحد، و"يتقمّص" هيوز حبيبته باللغة إلى ما وراء الموت، وقد يأتي ذلك تحقيقاً لما كانت سيلفيا بلات قد ورته في قصيدة لها موجّهة إلى هيوز، بعنوان "هديّة عيد الميلاد".
