في هذا الكتاب مجموعة قصائد لملمها الكاتب عبد الوهاب البياتي وترجمها إلى العربية لتكون زاداً لكل راغب بالاضطلاع على كنوز الشعر العربي في البداية أودع المترجم مقدمة تحدث فيها عن "ناظم حكمت" حياته وكتاباته ورحلة وفاته ثم بدأ بإثبات القصائد التي اختارها مبتدأ كتابه بقصيدة هي عبارة عن رسالة كتبها الشاعر اليوناني "منلاوس لاودمس" موجهاً إياها إلى ناظم حكمت الذي كان يومها سجيناً في زنزانته استامبول المظلمة، وفيها يرد على قصيدة كان ناظم حكمت قد وجهها بدوره للشاعر اليوناني والذي كان أيضاً سجيناً في معتقل "ماكرونيزوس".
أما القصائد الأخرى فهي إما لنظام حكمت ومترجمة أو لكتاب غربيين متميزين مختلفين ولكنها تجتمع تحت لواء بعض المفردات العامة كالحرية، والعذاب، والوطن، والموت، والثورة،... ومن عناوين هذه القصائد نذكر اعتقال أنتونيو (غارسيا لوركا) عن العدالة الإنسانية (بول إيلوار)، 9 نيسان (أوتوغلستدا)، اليوم الخامس إضراب عن الطعام (ناظم حكمت) إلى بول روبنسن (عبد الله كوران)...
في الخمسين أتبع فارس الشباب الأبدي طريق العقل الذي كان يخفق في قلبه فمضى ذات يوم من أيام تموز وراء الجمال والحقيقة والعدالة وأمامه كانت الدنيا بعماليقها السخيفة والنتنة وتحته كانت بغلته البرصاء حزينة ومشبعة بفكرة البطولة أنا أعلم أنه حينما نقع في هذا الهوى وحينما يكون لدينا قلب كبير فإنه لا مرد للقضاء يا دون كيشوت لا مرد للقضاء، إذ يتحتم علينا أن نقاتل طواحين الهواء.
