يكاد يمضي على قيام ثورة 23 يوليو 52 حوالي نصف قرن من الزمان، ومع ذلك فإن الجدل المثار حول هذه الثورة لا يهدأ، يتناولها ويتناول سائر أعمالها وخطواتها، كما يتناول سائر قادتها أو عناصرها الفاعلة، أو على الأقل أبرز هؤلاء القادة أو تلك العناصر، وأبعدهم أثراً في قيام الثورة، أو في تحديد مسارها. ويوسف صديق الذي يتحدث عنه هذا الكتاب هو واحد ممن وهبوا أنفسهم للثورة منذ مطلع شبابه، فحلم بها وتمناها من كل قلبه، وعمل من أجلها من كل موقع وفي كل وقت، وبكل شجاعة وإخلاص. وبطولة يوسف صديق في ليلة الثورة أصبحت معروفة ويكتب عنها الكثيرون الآن، وخاصة في ذكرى قيام الثورة. وهذا الكتاب يعرض لشخصية يوسف صديق ومواقفه بالبيان المفصل، وهو يمتاز عن غيره مما كتب في هذا الجانب الهام من تاريخ ثورة يوليو، بكون محمد توفي الأزهري، مؤلفه، قريب يوسف صديق، فهو عمه وخاله بنفس الوقت، إلى جانب ذلك فقد كان قريباً منه في كثير من فترات حياته على المستوى الشخصي بالإضافة إلى أنه سجن وعاش معه في السجن الحربي لمدة ليست بالقصيرة. لذا فقد أتى الكتاب غنياً بالمادة التاريخية، وقد حرص المؤلف على إبداء رأيه وتقيمه للأحداث والمواقف، من موقع القرب منها، ومن موقع التأمل الطويل لها على مدى حياته كلها.
