يجادل جون لويس غاديس بأن المنهج التاريخي أعقد بكثير مما يدركه حتى المؤرخون أنفسهم، مع أنه لا يصعب فهمه أو تفسيره، فكما يرسم علماء الخرائط المشاهد الجغرافية مكانيّاً، يتمثّل المؤرخون ما لا يستطيعون إستعادته زمانيّاً، وبفعلهم ذلك يجمع المؤرخون بين منهجيات الفنانين والجيولوجيين وعلماء الحفريات وعلماء الأناسة والأحياء التطورية؛ وتتوازى مقارباتهم بأشكال مثيرة مع علوم الفيزياء الحديثة ونظريات الفوضى والتعقيد ونظمها؛ ولا تشبه كثيراً ما يحدث في العلوم الإجتماعية، حيث يبدو البحث عن متغيرات مستقلة في نظم ساكنة منفصلاً عن عالم الواقع كما نعرفه.
من، إذن، يستحق أن نخلع عليه أو نخلع عنه صفة العلمية؟...
يتقصى غاديس هذا السؤال أيضاً، على طريقة مارك بلوخ وإي. إتش. كار، وبأسلوبهما الساحر، فيبقى كتابه "المشهد التاريخي" في آن مقدمة جذابة في المنهج التاريخي للمبتدئين، وتأكيداً لفاعلية هذا المنهج وقوته وكفاءته بيد ممارسيه المختصين، وتحدياً صارخاً لعلماء الإجتماع والعلوم الطبيعية، ونقداً لاذعاً لإدعاءات ما بعد الحداثة بأننا لا نستطيع معرفة شيء عن الماضي.
