تتناول هذه الدراسة مفهوم التاريخ وتطور الفكرة التاريخية عند المؤلفين المسلمين وتطور معالجتهم لها مع اختلاف المدارس التاريخية أولاً في المدينة والبصرة والكوفة قم في العراق في القرنين الرابع والخامس للهجرة/العاشر والحادي عشر للميلاد ثم في مصر وفي إقليم الشام والجزيرة (الذي غلب عليه في الفترة الممتدة بين القرنين السادس والثامن للهجرة/الثاني عشر والرابع عشر للميلاد علماء الحديث والفقهاء وكتب الرجال) وفي اليمن حتى نهاية القرن التاسع الهجري/الخامس عشر الميلادي إضافة إلى المصادر التاريخية التي كتبها النصارى واليهود الذين عاشوا في المجتمع الإسلامي وتناولت بعد ذلك دراسة الأشكال المستخدمة في عرض المادة التاريخية وكذلك مناهج ونظريات النقد التاريخي عند المؤرخين المسلمين في إطار نشأة وتطور الثقافة الإسلامية في العموم في الشرق مهد الإسلام ومركز ثقله الدائم وكذلك التفسير التاريخي ونظريات النقد التاريخي عند الغربيين وكتابة العرب المحدثين للتاريخ الإسلامي.
