كان الإمام إبن قتيبة الدينوري (213-216ه) أديباً لغوياً ومفكراً إسلامياً له دوره البارز في العصر العباسي، ويشهد على ذلك مصنفاته العديدة في علم الحديث، والتي تؤكد درايته، وأحاطته التامة بالحديث وعلومه وفنونه، ومنها معرفته بالحديث الصحيح والضعيف والموضوع وغيرها. من هنا جاءت دراسة الدكتور إبراهيم طه حمودي التميمي المعنونة (الإمام إبن قتيبة الدينوري وجهوده في الحديث وعلومه) لإلقاء الضوء على ما قدمه الإمام في مجال تأويل مختلف الحديث وبيان موضوعه، وتمييز صحيحه من سقيمه، وشرح عريبه والدفاع عن الحديث النبوي وأصحابه والرد على المغرضين.
تتألف الدراسة من بابين وخاتمة، تغطي عصره وحياته الشخصية والعلمية، كما تغطي جهوده في الحديث وعلومه، ومنها: معرفته بمصطلح الحديث، معرفته بعلم غريب الحديث، ومختلفه، وناسخه ومنسوخه، وأخيراً معرفته بعلم رجال الحديث.
في الكتاب سيجد القارىء نبذة عن كل مصنف ومخطوط ألفه إبن قتيبة في شتى ميادين العلم والمعرفة، كالحديث وعلوم القرآن والفقه واللغة والنحو والتاريخ والسِير والأدب وغيرها من العلوم. لذا فهو يعد من العلماء الموسوعيين في التأليف والتصنيف، فمصنفاته على ما يذكر المؤلف لا يمكن حصرها والتي تزيد على ستين مصنفاً، ومن الكتب التي تم الحديث عنها في هذا الكتاب نذكر: كتاب (المعارف)، كتاب (عيون الأخبار)، كتاب (أدب الكاتب)، كتاب (الشعر والشعراء)، كتاب (تأويل مشكل القرآن)، كتاب (تفسير غريب القرآن) وغيرها. ومن المصنفات المخطوطة والمفقودة التي جرى التعريف بها في هذا الكتاب أيضاً: كتاب (تأويل الرؤيا)، كتاب (دلائل النبوة)، كتاب (القراءات)، وغيرها ، وهي ما يصل عددها إلى 27 كتاباً، أما المصنفغات المنسوبة للإمام فيذكر المؤلف كتاب (الإمامة والسياسة)، كتاب (أرجوزة الظاء والضاد)، كتاب (وصية إبن قتيبة لولده)، وكتاب (النبات) وغيرها.
