إن هذا المؤلف لا يقدم جديداً عن ثورة يوليو/تموز أو عن دور جمال عبد الناصر ورفاقه أعضاء تنظيم الضباط الأحرار فيها، ولكن ما سعى المؤلف إلى تقديمه بين دفتي هذا الكتاب، طرح جديد ومن زاوية جديدة في حياة جمال عبد الناصر وحياة مصر. فالكثيرون لا يعرفون أن جمال عبد الناصر كان أول وزير للداخلية في مصر يوم إلغاء الملكية وإعلان الجمهورية عقب قيام ثورة 23 يوليو/تموز سنة 1952... وكثيرون ممن يعرفوا ذلك ليست لديهم الرؤية الكاملة عن تفاصيل وخفايا وأسرار تلك الأيام المائة وثمانية عشر أيام التي قضاها جمال عبد الناصر على مقعد وزير الداخلية في الفترة من يوم 18 يونيو سنة 1953 وحتى يوم 7 أكتوبر من العام نفسه.
هذه الفترة التي جلس فيها البكباشي-المقدم-جمال عبد الناصر على مقعد وزير الداخلية في أول حكومة تشكلها الثورة تعدّ من بين أهم أحداث تلك الفترة التي تغير فيها وجه الحياة على أرض مصر، لها مدلولات عدة يجب أن تسلط عليها الأضواء عندما يكتب أو يروي تاريخ مصر المعاصر.
وهذه الفترة محلّ البحث تكشف أيضاً عن أبعاد إضافية في تطور التركيبة الشخصية القيادية لذلك الزعيم الذي جنح إلى اختيار وزارة الداخلية ليجلس على مقعد المسؤولية فيها إدراكاً منه لأهمية هذه الوزارة وحتمية أن يعاد تشكيلها وتكوينها برؤيته الخاصة التي كان يحركها بداخله إيمان راسخ بأنه هو الذي سيكون قائد وزعيم مصر، وهو ما تحقق فيما بعد.
يشار أيضاً إلى أن استعراض أحداث هذه الفترة وتحليلها كشف جوانب متعددة من حياة جمال عبد الناصر، لذا كان اهتمام المؤلف منصباً على توثيق وتسجيل ملامح وخفايا العلاقة بين جمال عبد الناصر وبين أجهزة الأمن والجماعات السرية وعلى رأسها الأخوان المسلمون والشيوعيون، وغيرها سواء فيما قبل الثورة عندما كان ثائراً يسعى إلى تكوين تنظيم لقلب نظام الحكم، أو بعد الثورة التي نجح في قيادتها بذلك التنظيم "الضباط الأحرار". أو عندما كان يتأهب ويخطط للانفراد بقيادة البلاد فبدأ يعدّ العدة لذلك بإعادة تنظيم مرافق الأمن كلها ومن بينها وزارة الداخلية التي كان أول وزير لها بعد إعلان الجمهورية وإلغاء الملكية كما ذكر آنفاً.
