بهذه الهتافات بدأت الانتفاضة مساء الخميس (17 تشرين أول) من قِبَل مجموعة من الشبّان والشابات الذين تداعوا بواسطة "الواتس آب" للالتقاء في ساحة رياض الصلح احتجاجاً على قرار الحكومة بفرض ضريبة على وسيلة التواصل الاجتماعي "واتس أب" من دون أي حقّ لأن هذه التسهيلات تملكها شركة أمريكية، وتقدّمها مجاناً للمستخدمين. ثم انتقل المحتجون إلى جسر "الرينغ" حيث قطعوا السير هناك ما استدعى قوى الأمن للتدخل، وبعد مشاجرات توجّهوا إلى رياض الصلح مجدّداً بعد أن تضاعف عددهم بشكل ملفت. في هذه الأثناء، هرعت وسائل الإعلام بطواقمها إلى ساحتي رياض الصلح والشهداء لتغطي الحدث، وبدَتْ وكأنها تغطي كسوف الشمس الذي لن يستمرّ أكثر من ساعة، ثم تعود الأمور إلى سابق حالها.
كانت بداية التحرّك مع عشرة أشخاص، وبعد ساعة ازداد عن الألف، وعندما حصل صدام مع مرافقي أحد الوزراء، تجاوز عدد المحتجّين العشرة آلاف لأن هذه الحادثة استفزّت الناس الذين كانوا يتابعون ما يحصل على شاشات التلفاز.
أ. د. نمر فريحه، يحمل إجازة في التاريخ من الجامعة اللبنانية، وماجستير في العلوم السياسية، ودكتوراه (PhD) في التربية من جامعة ستانفورد الأمريكية. شغل منصب عميد في أكثر من جامعة، وكان رئيساً للمركز التربوي بين عامي 1999 و2002. ويعمل حالياً كأستاذ مشرف على طلبة الدكتوراه في الجامعة اللبنانية والجامعة اليسوعية. من مؤلفاته: - سفينة الرهائن، (رواية). بيروت: دار الفكر اللبناني، 2008
