نحن هنا بلدة بروانة الواقعة على نهر الفرات. والحداث ترى بعينى كرم فوزى روفائيل: مهندس مصرى ليبرالي الذهن، وجودى الحساسية جاء إلى العراق ثم عاد- بعد خبرات أغلبها أليم- إلى بلده الإسكندرية.
تحمل الرواية في صفحتها الأولى كلمات للسيد المسيح من إنجيل متى، وتغتني بأصداء مسيحية ما أحوج أدبنا المعاصر إليها كي يزداد غنى، ويكثف نسيجه، وتتراكب طبقات حفائره التاريخية. وعلى امتداد الصفحات نلتقى بإشارات إلى الميثولوجيا الإغريقية. والسطور المصرية القديمة. ونشيد الإنشاد ( أتراني على صواب إذ أسشعر هنا صدى خافيا من إدوار الخرائط - كاهن الحداثية الأكبر- أم أنى واهم؟) تتصدى الفصول مقتطفات من العهد الجديد وبورخيس وبودلير وجويس، ما بين كورنيش الإسكندرية ومقاهي العراق وشوراعها تتحرك عدسة كرم اللاقطة الراصدة ما بين رموز حزب البعث الحاكم والعمالة المصرية فى العراق، لتبنى حساً باغتراب عميق. وتنتهي الرواية بمونولوج داخلى جليل يذكرنا- وإن اختلفت طبيعة قائلة- بمونولوج " مولى بلوم" فى ختام رواية " يوليسيز"
هذه رواية مهمة- وإن لم تخل من عيوب فنية- تدق بجرأة محسوبة، على أبواب المحرمات الثلاثة الكبرى فى مجتمعاتنا وربما- بدرجات متفاوته- فى كل مجتمعات الأرض: محرمات الدين والجنس والسياسة.
