في هذا الكتاب نقرأ (مقتطفات) من رحلة القسي بورتر إلى جبل حوران. كان ذلك في العام (1852) أثناء اشتعال الحرب الدرزية ورفض دروز حوران أن يقدموا مجندين للدولة العثمانية، عرف معها الرحالة بورتر أن رحلته قائمة على المخاطر، إلا أن اندحار الجيوش التركية - كما يذكر المؤلف - في أواخر كانون الثاني (1853) أحاطه علماً وأملاً بأنه صار بإمكانه القيام بجولة، فغادر دمشق في 31 كانون الثاني مستفيداً من قافلة كانت في طريق عودتها من دمشق إلى جبل حوران.
وعبر صفحات الكتاب يصف القس بورتر محطات من رحلته وبرفقته جيمس بارنت ومستر كويل وهو رحّالة أمريكي، بالإضافة إلى ترجمان الرحلة والخادمان، وفي هذه الرحلة تحضر مناطق حوران "براق" ، "جبل حرمون" ، "بصرى" ، "صلخد" ، "القريا" ، "حبران" ، والسويداء. ومع هذه المناطق تحضر عادات وتقاليد وضيافة وكرم أهالي حوران للرحالة، وإعجابه بمناطق حوران، فيكثر من الوصف للجبال والوديان والصخور السوداء والأبنية والآثار ويذكر تواريخ بناءها ومنها آثار "قنوات" وفي هذا يقول: "ويوافقني القارىء على أنه من النادر أن تجد في سورية مواقع تفوق قنوات في اتساع أبنيتها الأثرية وأهميتها وهي ليست مثل بعض المدن التي سبق أن زرناها ... فإن تاريخ قنوات على قلة الوثائق التي وصلتنا عنها يعود إلى أكثر من ثلاثة آلاف سنة وقد ظلت مدة ألفي سنة في عداد المدن الرئيسية في باشان ...".
