يعرف المؤلف بفارس من فرسان الكلمة المؤمنة الصادقة، هو الشيخ عبد الحميد بن باديس، والحديث عن ابن باديس إنما هو حديث كفاح أمة بأثرها، فهو مصلح ديني، ومعلم قدير، ومفت مجتهد، وأديب عملاق، وصحفي ذائع الصيت، ثم مفسر واسع الاطلاع، له تجليات في تفسيره لآيات الذكر الحكيم. وهو إلى جانب ذلك كله رمز من رموز التنوير في وطنه الجزائر وفي الأوطان العربية والإسلامية الأخرى.
وقد وضع المؤلف نصب عينية مكانة ابن باديس المميزة، وعلمه الواسع المتعدد الجوانب، وتضحياته من أجل تحرير وطنه من يد المستعمر الغاصب. فالمؤلف يسلط الضوء على حياة وجهد عالم من علماء النهضة الإسلامية في الجزائر حيث ينقل للقارئ فهمه لسلوك وفكر ابن باديس الذي يرتكز على نظرية الوسطية في الإسلام، والتي قاوم بها الشيخ ابن باديس عدوّين من آن واحد: أولاً الجهل وضعف الثقافة الدينية الصحيحة المشجعة على استيعاب التقدم والتحديث، ثانياً: الاستعمار الذي حاول مسخ الهوية الجزائرية.
