كان الفنان مصطفى أحمد يهتم اهتمامًا خاصًا بالصفات "التصويرية" في لوحاته، مثل عجينة اللون الدسمة المخلوطة بعناية، وثراء الملمس، وإعطاء الإحساس بكتلة العنصر المرسوم وثقله.. وغير ذلك من العناصر الشكلية التي جعلت من ولحاته نسيجًا خاصًا يميز أسلوبه في الرسم.
وقد أقام الفنان صروحًا صحراوية موحشة في معظم لوحاته.. حيطانها نظيفة وغليظة وعالية.. وظلالها ثقيلة قاتمة، وهي تبدو أنيقة ونظيفة، على عكس واقع الجدران في مدننا وقرانا المصرية، ومع ذلك تكشف عن مصريتها، ربما بسبب لونها المصفر الكالح الذي تتحول إليه جميع ألوان المباني من الخارج بسبب الشمس الساطعة التي "تلحس" جميع الألوان..
إن لوحاته صعبة الفهم فهي ليست من النوع السهل الدارج في مجال الرسم بالألوان.. فرغم وضوح مفرداتها بشكل عام، إلا أنها تحقق في مجموعها إحساسًا بالغربة، والترقب، والخوف من المجهول.. وقدرة لوحاته على إيقاظ هذه المشاعر. توضح ما تتميز به من العمق والأصالة والصدق في التعبير. فهي ترتكز على فكرة فلسفية تنظر إلى الإنسان ككيان مطلق، وتتعامل مع الفراغ أو المساحة التي يتحرك فيها هذا الإنسان كفضاء مطلق أيضًا.
ومن أبرز ما يميز شخصيته الفنية هو قوتها ووضوحها، فمن السهل تمييز لوحاته بين لوحات أقرانه من الرسامين، فنحن لسنا في حاجة إلى قراءة التوقيع لنعرف صاحب اللوحة بعد أن أرسى الفنان مجموعة مميزات لشخصيته الفنية، في الألوان والخطوط وطريقة التنازل.
