بقدر ما عبرت إنتفاضة العراق سنة 1956 عما كان مخبوءاً تحت سطح الشارع العراقي من تناقضات وآلام وتطلعات، وما كشفت عنه من قدرة الجماهير على تنظيم قواها والتحرك ضد رموز النظام القائم، فإنها قدمت بتحركها هذا "تجربة حية" لما ستقوم به بعد سنتين فقط من هذه الأحداث، فشعارات المتظاهرين، من مثل: مقاطعة الشركات الأجنبية، وإسقاط الأحلاف العسكرية، والإنسحاب من حلف بغداد، والوحدة العربية، ومساندة قوى الثورة العربية في الجزائر، والحياد الإيجابي بين المعسكرين، ستصبح أهدافاً معلنة للثورة في صبيحة يوم 14 تموز 1958، بل أن إنتفاضة 1956 حملت معها تنبؤات بما سيتعرض له رموز النظام نفسه.
وقد سجل تقرير خاص للتحقيقات الجنائية مؤرخ في 8 من الشهر نفسه عن موقف الرأي العام في العراق من الحكومة ما نصه "يعتقد الناس الآن، وكلهم يتحدثون في هذا الأمر، أن حكومة نوري السعيد وسياسته انتهت بإنتهاء نفوذ بريطانيا في الشرق الأوسط، وأن الأسرة المالكة انتهت هي الأخرى"، وهكذا رسمت إنتفاضة 1956 صورة ما سيحدث سنة 1958.
وعلى الرغم من أهمية ذلك كله، لم يجر لحد الآن إستقصاء وثائق الإنتفاضة، من تقارير أمنية، وبيانات حزبية، وعرائض شعبية، وبرقيات تنديد أو تنديد، ولذا فقد عمدت "لجنة السلسلة الوثائقية" في بيت الحكمة، إلى توجيه الإهتمام إلى هذا الموضوع.
فكان أن تولى الأستاذ الدكتور "جعفر عباس حمدي"، المتخصص في تاريخ العراق المعاصر، جمع هذه الوثائق من مظانها، وتفحصها، وترتيبها على وفق سياقها الزمني، والتقديم لها على وفق ما يرى القارئ الكريم، وبذا أصبح متاحاً للباحثين والقراء عامة الإطلاع على وثائق ظلت محتجبة، في ملفات بعيد عن متناول الأيدي، عدة عقود من السنين.
