إن القرون العديدة من التاريخ العربي التي تسبق وفاة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم لا تُدرس إلا قليلاً ولا يُعرف عنها سوى النادر، قد يُظن أن هذا الجهل يعكس عدم أهمية جزيرة العرب في التاريخ العالمي قبل ظهور الإسلام، لكن هذا حكمٌ مجمف.
فمع أن سكان جزيرة العرب كانوا يعيشون في محيط الإمبراطوريات العظمى، فقد كانوا ذوي أهمية كبيرة إليها؛ أولاً، إن موطنهم يحتل موقعاً مركزياً بين الهند وأفريقية وبلاد بين النهرين والعالم المتوسطي، الأمر الذي يعني أن البشر والسلع العابرين من منطقة إلى أخرى كانوا مجبرين غالباً على إجراء الصفقات معهم؛ ثانياً، إن وجود اللُبان البخور والمر والنباتات العطرية الأخرى في جنوبي جزيرة العرب، وكلها كانت مطلوبة جداً في حضارات البحر المتوسط وبلاد بين النهرين، قد جلب الثروة والشهرة إلى زارعيها ومصدّريها العرب، ثالثاً، قدمت جزيرة العرب خزاناً من القوة البشرية العسكرية التي كانت تملك خبرة بالسفر في الصحراء، ومارست دوراً هاماً كحليف وأيضاً كعدو لمختلف القوى.
مؤلف هذا الكتاب، الأول في مجاله، بحث في مختلف جوانب حياة العرب في جزيرتهم، أي في الإقتصاد والمجتمع والدين والفن والعمارة والمصنوعات اليدوية واللغة والأدب، إعتماداً على المصادر الأولية، وقدم لنا وثيقة معرفية كي أوسع الفهم التقليدي للجاهلية من حقبة قصيرة جداً قبل بزوغ الإسلام إلى الإمتداد الكامل من الزمن منذ النشوء الأول للمجتمعات المعقدة في جزيرة العرب في الألفية الرابعة قبل الميلاد، إنها حقبة هامة من التاريخ في جزء هام من العالم ولذلك فإني أمل أن هذه الطبعة العربية من هذا الكتاب ستجعل قصته معروفة لجمهور أعرض بكثير...
