تناول هذا البحث شاعرا من شعراء العربية، وفحلا من فحول العصر العباسي الأول الذي حوى بين دفتيه تطور وتغير وانفتاح، وتجديد في الأفكار التي طرأت عليه، والموضوعات التي طرقها والأساليب التي عمد إليها مقلدا حينا، ومجددا حينا آخر، والمجتمع العباسي ثري خصب منتج معطاء تفاعلت فيه معاني الشعر وموضوعاته وصوره، وأساليبه وخياله، فهذه الفترة الزمنية كانت حقبة زاخرة بالألوان الثقافية مترعة بأسباب المعرفة، فنهل منه الشعراء وارتووا من ينابيعها فجاء شعرهم متميزا كل التميز يطرب الناس لسماعه، ويعجب السامعون لإنشاده، لما حواه من أفكار جديدة وأساليب لم تكن مألوفة من قبل فسما قدرهم وذاع صيتهم، وديك الجن كان من تلك البيئة، وذلك العصر الرحب، فأقبل على الصنعة وظلت صنعته سائغة لصدقه في شعره، فهو لم يستجد به أحدا بل قصره على النسيب، ووصف الخمر، ورثاء عشيقته وبعض أصدقائه، وعلى الرغم من كونه أسما لامعا في عالم الشعر العربي في العصر العباسي الأول، بقي شاعرنا مغمورا لا يعرف عنه شيء إذا لم يحظ شعره بالدرس والعناية التي يستحقها، فحري بنا أن نقف على كل قصيدة من شعره محللين منقبين مستخرجين دقائق المعاني، مبرزين الألفاظ المتخيرة وقد واءم بينها موائمة جعلت من شعره يتسم بنغمات موسيقية أخّاذة تصل إلى القلب بلا استئذان
