يقوم هذا البحث بدراسة لواحد من شعراء العصر المملوكي، هو محمد بن دانيال الموصلي (646هـ-710هـ) وتكمن أهمية هذا الموضوع في أنه يتعرض لشاعر لم تتناوله دراسة من قبل- على أنه شاعر له ديوانه واتجاهاته وأسلوبه وشخصيته المميزة، وأن الشاعر ضمن شعراء العصر المملوكي، وهو عصر أدبي مغمور. شابه كثير من الغموض مما جعل الباحثين لا يقبلون على اكتشاف مكنونه، مع أنه في حاجة إلى مزيد من الدراسة والبحث، خاصة أن هذا العصر امتد قرابة الثلاثة القرون من عمر التاريخ العربي وأدبه.
ويعرض البحث لكثير من شعر ابن دانيال، مع تحليل لما قله، وكشف به عن حياته وحياة مجتمعه وما فيه من حركات اجتماعية، وسياسية وفكرية من خلال هذا الديوان.
ويسهم البحث مع غيره من دراسات- تناولت شعراء هذا العصر وأدباءه- في محاولة لكشف عن هذه الحقبة، والاقتراب أكثر لأدب هذا العصر.
ويحتوي البحث على ثلاثة فصول: خصصت الفصل الأول: "لحياته"، تأريخاً لحياة الشاعر في العراق ومصر، فعرضت لنشأته بين الموصل والقاهرة، ولهذه البيئة- التي نشأ فيها والتي قضي بها جل حياته- بمختلف جوانبها، الطبيعية، والسياسية، والثقافية والاجتماعية، وخصصت الفصل الثاني: لموضوعات شعره التقليدي منها- كالمديح والاستمناح، والوصف، والغزل، والهجاء، والمجون، والعبث، والحكمة، والزهد، والتصوف. وما تجدد منها، كالتهكم، والسخرية، والفكاهة، والرثاء، والتهنئة ، والحرمان. ودرست في الفصل الثالث: الخصائص الفنية لشعره، وذلك من حيث البناء الموسيقي، والموضوعي، والصورة الفنية عنده، والاستخدام اللغوي في شعره.
