لقد حظي مفهوم ما وراء المزاج بإهتمام عدد من الباحثين، منذ القرن الثامن عشر أشار علماء النفس إلى وجود مكونين في الخبرة الإنسانية أحدهما المعرفة والآخر الوجدان.
وتطورات دراسات الوجدان إلى دراسة الأمزجة، وأهتم كل من "سالوفي وماير 1995" بدراسة ما وراء المزاج (Meta- Mood).
فالخبرة المزاجية تتركب على الأقل من عنصرين هما: الخبرة المباشرة للمزاج، أما العنصر الثاني فهو مستوى ما وراء الخبرة المزاجية، ويتكون مستوى ما وراء الخبرة من المشاعر والأفكار عن المزاج.
ويمثل الوعي الصفحة الأمامية للعقل، فهو يحتوي على المعلومات التي ينتقيها الفرد، وتعبر هذه البنية عن إهتماماته، فالوعي معرفياً يمثل مجموعة من المكونات المعرفية التي يكون الفرد واعياً بها، إذ أن وعينا يتضمن خبرات من المعرفة والوجدان، وبالتالي فإن هناك فعاليات متبادلة بينهما (المعرفة والوجدان) تنبثق في الدافعية، والفرد إما أن يكون لديه وعي مرتفع أو منخفض بمزاجه وخبرة ما وراء المزاج.
إن وعي الفرد بخبرة ما وراء مزاجه يشمل ضمناً وعيه بالخبرة المزاجية المباشرة، وتشير خبرة ما وراء المزاج إلى وعي الفرد أو فكرته عن المشاعر والأفكار التي أدت إلى نشوء هذه الخبرة.
