تتناول هذه الدراسة المسألة الدينية عند آينشتاين؛ بمعنى، هل كان الدين مسألة أساسية وهامة في فكر هذا الفيزيائي الشامخ؟ وهل هي مسألة تستحق كل هذا العناء وهذا التصدي؟... وما هو موقع هذه العبقرية الكونية من الفكر الديني عموماً؟... وما هي وجهة نظره؟...
بكلمات أخرى، هل كان متديناً بالمعني التقليدي للدين، أم كانت له وجهة نظر مغايرة؟ أم إنه كان متأثراً بفكر ما، بفيلسوف ما؟ أليس هو القائل "إنني أريد أن أعرف كيف خلق الله هذا العالم؟ أريد أن أعرف أفكار الله"... هذه التساؤلات وغيرها ستكون موطئ قدم هذه الدراسة.
تبدأ الدراسة أولاً بنظرة إجمالية خاطفة حول فلسفة الدين وكيف تطور الدين عند الإنسان ثم تتناول الخلفية الدينية عند آينشتاين ووجهات نظرة المتأثرة بأفكار الفلاسفة وتحديداً بالفيلسوف باروخ سبينوزا حتى دينه الكوني المتمثل في قوانين الطبيعة.
واخيراً ترسم لنا هذه الدراسة دين العلم بمعادلة وجسيم الإله تسبقه القواسم المشتركة بين العلم والدين والفلسفة.
هذه هي الخطوط العريضة التي تمثل الهاجس الديني عند آينشتاين والتي غالباً ما يشبع فيها التناقض: يطلق على نفسه متديناً ولا أدرياً ومؤمناً بعقلانية قوانين الطبيعة بروح تتجلى في قوانين الكون، روح متعالية على الإنسان، وغير مؤمن بإله شخصيّ ولا بالعناية الإلهية، مؤكداً بأهمية المبادئ الأساسية للأخلاق التي لا تستدعي مشرعاً لقانون يعمل على أساس الثواب والعقاب، ويرفض الإلحاد بكل أشكاله منادياً ومبشراً بدين كوني.
وبما أن التنظيم والترتيب والتناظر من سمات الكون وهو ما يطلق عليه آينشتاين متكافئ أو متسق الإتجاهات - Isotropic - لأن "التنظيم والإمكان هما الطريقان الملكيان المؤديان إلى الفكر الرياضياتي.
ونحن تحديداً في مجال الرياضيات الإلهية لأن التنظيم والإمكان المقصودين يخصان الله... هو المسؤول وحده عن إمكان تنظيمه".
