الآزتك من الشعوب القديمة التي كان لها شأن عظيم في تاريخ القارة أميركا، ورغم ما دلت عليه تصرفاتهم، أحياناً، من بدائية، فإنهم استطاعوا أن يبنوا حضارة ذات بها، وأن يؤثروا تأثيراً كبيراً في الشعوب التي عاشت حولهم. ويمكن وصف حضارة الآزتك بأنها حضارة مفارقات، من حيث إنها كانت من ناحية، متخلفة في شؤون المعتقد وما ترك ذلك المعتقد في تصرفاتهم من قسوة وبدائية، وإنها كانت، من ناحية أخرى، متطورة في شؤون البناء والتربية ونظام الحكم.
ويلفت النظر أوجه الشبه بين تلك الحضارة وحضارات العالم القديم، رغم بعد الشقة وانقطاع الصلة الواضحة. الأزتك بنوا أهرامات مدرجة، وشيدوا القصور، وحفروا أقنية الري. كذلك آمنوا بالحياة بعد الموت وقدموا القرابين، وخافوا الظواهر الطبيعية وعظموها، ورصدوا حركة الشمس والكواكب ورسموا لها الخرائط الفلكية.
وتتميز حضارة الأزتك، في جملة ما تتميز به بأساليب التربية ونظام المحاكم وهما مظهران وجههما، عندهم إحساس عميق وصارم بالعدالة والتزام راسخ بالمبادئ. ولا تزال تلك الحضارة موضوعاً جديداً بالنسبة إلى الفتى العربي، فيه الكثير من المعلومات الغريبة المشوقة التي تزيد من معرفته بالأمم القديمة وأساليب حياتها، وتجعله يتفهم حتى خرافاتها وتصرفات شعوبها البدائية.
