استيقظ العالم فى نهاية عام 2019 على خبر ظهور وباء كوفيد- 19 تحديداً أو ما يُطلق عليه عالمياً (وباء كورونا)، فشكل ما يشبه الصدمة، وكان له أثراً كبيراً على الصحة النفسية للأفراد، وسبب الكثير من الاضطرابات النفسية كالقلق والخوف من الموت ومن المستقبل، والاكتئاب، كما أثر على العلاقات الإنسانية، والاجتماعية للأفراد والجماعات، إلى جانب تأثيره الأكبر على الجانب الدينى، والأخلاقى، وعلى علاقة الناس مع الله، ومع الذات، ومع الآخرين.
وتعد الأزمات والكوارث الطارئة قديمة قِدَم وجود الانسان على الأرض، وبعض الأزمات يمكن السيطرة عليها وتجاوزها، فى حين بعضها الآخر يصعب التخلص من آثارها النفسية والانفعالية فى المستقبل.
ومن أمثلة تلك الأزمات الحروب، والأحداث السياسية والاقتصادية، والكوارث الطبيعية كالفيضانات والزلازل والبراكين، ومن الأزمات أيضاً الأمراض والأوبئة، ومن تلك الأوبئة الطاعون، والكوليرا، وفيروس سارس، وإيبولا، وأخيراً وباء كورونا. وللأزمات بعض الخصائص وهى أنها مفاجئة وعنيفة، وتُحدث حالة من الارتباك وفقدان التوازن، وتتطلب أساليب تدخل مبتكرة وغير تقليدية، كما أنها تستمر مدة من الزمن قبل أن يعود الشخص لحالته الطبيعية.
