يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يفتح أفقاً جديداً من اهتمام الأدب العربي بالأدب المقارن من خلال دراسات لا تغفل الآداب والتعابير الفنية القديمة مما سجلته اللغات القديمة كالكنعانية والسرديانية والفارسية، آخذاً بعين الإعتبار تطورات العلوم الأدبية الأخرى، مثل النقد الأدبي، والألسنية، وما يتصل بهما من فروع على الأخص، ما لها من تأثير على هذا الاتجاه الجديد في الدب المقارن.
على مثل هذا المنظور، يحاول الكتاب أن يرسم المنطلقات الأساسية للأدب المقارن في الأدب العربي المعاصر، كما يحاول أن يوضح صورة "المقارن" وما يتطلبه من ثقافة ومن "عدة"، لينتقل، من ثم، إلى تحديد "ميادين" الدراسة المقارنة، معولاً على أبرزها، وعلى ما يلي حاجات الأدب المعاصر وهمومه، ليعمل أخيراً على دراسة مختلف العلاقات التي تربط الأدب المقارن بالعلوم الإنسانية الأخرى، أو تميزه عنها. لذلك كله يضع المؤلف هذه الدراسة التطبيقية كنموذجاً منهجياً لدراسة المؤثرات فاختار موضوع "سعيد عقل وبول فاليري" وقد اعتمدر"نظريات" سعيد عقل للمقارنة بينه وبين الشاعر الفرنسي الكبير بول فاليري، فجعله في قسمين: القسم الأول: "مدخل إلى الأدب المقارن" ويضم ستة فصول عن الأدب المقارن النقد الأدبي العربي، أما القسم الثاني فخصص لـ "سعيد عقل وبول فاليري" ويضم فصلان الأول يشكل قراءة في أفكار فاليري ومواقفه من خلال الصورة اللبنانية، والثاني يعكس: شاعرية اللقاء بين عقل وفاليري، ويتحدث عن مفهوم الشعر، مفهوم الحلق ومعناه، مفهوم اللغة، مفهوم القصيدة أو العمارة الشعرية.
