يمثّل قياس "نوعية الحياة" التطور الأحدث في قضية شغلت البشرية منذ القدم تحت مسميات متعددة، وهي تعيين مستوى الرفاه البشري وتباينه في الزمن، وفي المكان، وفي المجال الإجتماعي والسياسي.
وقد أعدت هذه الدراسة بتكليف من مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية، حيث تهدف إلى إستطلاع رأي عيّنة من المثقفين العرب حول نوعية الحياة في الوطن العربي.
ولكن الأحداث الجلل التي مرت بالوطن العربي في آب / أغسطس 1990، عصفت بالجدول الزمني للدراسة؛ ومن هذا المنطلق قامت الدراسة على مقدمة استعرضت مفهوم نوعية الحياة، ثم تحدثت عن مختلف القضايا في قياس نوعية الحياة من صياغة المشكلة إلى الصبو إلى الموضوعية ودور الإحصاء إلى إعتبارات تتعلق بالبيانات، ثم جرى الحديث عن قياس نوعية الحياة في البلدان العربية في السياق الدولي ثم عن نتائج إستطلاع الرأي.
