عندما كنت أكتب هذه الكلمات، كان يوجد أمامي هذا المجسَّم الذي يطابق ملامحي والذي صُنع من خلال صب مادة صمغية زرقاء على رأسي وكتفيَّ بينما كنت أتنفس من خلال أنبوبين وضعا في فتحتي أنفي، فكان رأس هذا المجسم يراقبنى عبر الغرفة. وبين الحين والآخر كانت العينان - اللتان اتخذتا لون عيني نفسه - تطرفان، بينما الفم ينفتح وينغلق.
هذا هو الإتقان بعينه باستثناء فارق واقعي واحد، فبينما كنت أتقدم بالعمر، لا يزال رأسي الآخر المصنوع منذ أكثر من عشر سنوات شابًّا؛ ما يجعلني في مثل موقف "دوريان جراي"بطل إحدى روايات أوسكار وايلد الشهيرة. ولا يزال ذلك الرأس محتفظًا بشعره الذي وضعت كل شعرة منه يدويًّا بدقة عالية، بينما يتساقط شعري سريعًا. وكانت جبهته ملساء، بينما جبهتي تتخللها التجاعيد، وهناك فارق آخر أكثر أهمية، فقد كان في الإمكان رفع أعلى رأس المجسم المطابق تمامًا لرأسي وإخراج المخ، وكنت غالبًا ما أخبر الناس بأنني قد قمت في الأساس بصناعته؛ كي يكون أداة جذب انتباه مساعدة في المحاضرات في أثناء تدريس علم النفس العصبي. على الأقل كان ذلك هو التفسير الذي عادة ما أقدمه حين يسألني أحد لماذا أهدرت كثيرًا من الوقت وأنفقت كثيرًا من المال الذي حصلت عليه بشق الأنفس للحصول على مثل هذا الشيء الغريب من بين كل ما يوجد على سطح الأرض. وفي الحقيقة كان هذا تبريرًا فعليًّا لما قمت به من شراء اندفاعي غير عقلاني وسخيف. الشراء الذي يمكن أن أختلق له الأعذار - كما هي حالة معظم التصرفات الاندفاعية - فقط عن طريق قول إنه بدا فكرة جيدة في حينها!
وفي حين أن الاندفاع الذي أدى إلى اقتنائي رأسًا آخر كان أحد اندفاعاتي الأكثر تكلفة، لكنه كان بأية حال من الأحوال أكثر الاندفاعات التي ساهمت في تغيير حياتي. ومن هذه الاندفاعات، حتى الآن، كان هناك ثلاثة؛ اثنان غيرا مجرى حياتي تمامًا، بينما الثالث، الذي سوف أذكره في الفصل الأول، أنقذ حياتي.
