موضوع هذا الكتاب كما يدل عليه اسمه أخبار عن أبي تمام وعلاقته بمن مدحهم، كأحمد بن أبي داؤد، والحسن بن رجاء، وابن الزيات، وعلاقة العلماء والأدباء به، وكيف كانوا يقوّمون شعره.
والكتابُ قيم من ناحية أنه يجلّي لنا بعض نواح لأبي تمام لم نعرفها فيما قرأنا في غيره من الكتب، ومؤلفه الصولي ثقة فيما يرويه، قريب عهد بأبي تمام، له بصر بالأدب، وذوق جيد في التقدير، والكتاب مكمل لسلسلة من الكتب ظهرت في عصر الصولي أو قريب منه.
ذلك أن أبا تمام خرج على الناس بنوع جديد من الشعر أخرجه من رأسه لا من قلبه، فهو يغوص على المعاني العقلية غوصاً، ثم يرفعها إلى السماء ويُعمل فيها خياله البعيد، ويختار لها الألفاظ، ويُعنى ببديعها وجناسها، فتم له من معانيه العميقة إلى القاع، وخياله المرتفع إلى السماء، وألفاظه المتجانسة المزوقة، نوع جديد من الشعر لم يُسبَق إليه.
