"توماس وولف" كاتب أمريكي ولد في اليوم الثالث من شهر تشرين الأول عام 1900 في آشفيل بنورت كارولينا. وقد عالج وولف بأسلوبه المميز موضوعاته التي يلتقطها من الواقع، حيث يلمس القارئ أن هناك صراعاً في الأفكار في أعمال وولف كما أن الحافز الملحمي والرغبة في أن يعرف الشخصية والتجربة الأمريكية كانا ظاهرين بصورة حادة في مؤلفاته. كما تتجلى في مؤلفاته أقوى ميزاته وهي تعبيره البلاغي في رصد السلوك الذاتي.
وهذا الكتاب يعرض لنماذج من فنه القصصي، تضم أهن ما كتبه المؤلف من أقاصيص وضعت أصلاً لتكون أجزاء في عمل كبير، حيث تتجلى فيها اهتمام وولف بالأضداد. وهذه القصص التي تضمها هذه المجموعة هي: لا تستطيع الرجوع إلى البيت، أسمر في الغابة.. غريب كالزمن، الموتى وحدهم يعرفون بروكلين، السيرك في الفجر، وجه الحرب، في الحديقة، قانون إيمان، تشيكا موجا، قصة رواية، في الزمن والنهر.
