يذهب مؤرخو الأدب الأمريكي المعاصر إلى أن أسلوب وولف الأدبي مارس تأثيرًا قويًا في الأدب الأمريكي الحديث، حيث ألهمتْ أعماله عددًا من كبار الكتاب مثل وليم فوكنر، وجاك كيرواك، وفيليب روث، وغيرهم. صدر كتاب "قصة رواية" للمرة الأولى سنة 1936، والكتاب عبارة عن سيرة ذاتية للكاتب الأمريكي، تحكي تجربته مع دور النشر ورفضها مخطوط عمله الروائي الأول، كما يروي معاناته مع الكتابة الإبداعية، مُبرزًا الدوَر المهمّ للمحرّرين الأدبيين. والكتاب ثمرة نقاشات دارت بين الكاتب وبين ناشر ومحرّر صديق، تناولت موضوعات شائقة مثل طريقة كتابة الرواية، والشطب والتنقيح، وإعادة كتابة الفصول، وترتيب الأحداث وبناء الشخصيات.
