ولد شهر ربيع الثاني سنة 639 هجري في حماة في سورية الشام. ونشأ بدر الدين بن جماعة في أسرة عربية مشهورة بالعلم والصلاح حيث كان والده وأخواه من أهل الحديث والعلم والتقوى.

يتناول الكتاب موضوع المتشابة اللفظي ، فيتناول اختلاف الألفاظ بالزيادة والنقصان ، أو الإفراط والجمع ، او التنكير والتعريف، او التقديم والتأخير أو إبدال حرف مكان حرف، او اختلاف حروف العطف أو حروف الجر ، او التحول من الغبية إلى الخطاب أو العكس، أو من الماضي إلى المضارع أو العكس.. ونحو ذلك أسلوب الالتفات ، اوتكرار الألفاظ مع تباين المعنى أو طوي ذكر الضد بالاكتفاء بذكر أحد الضدين والسكوت عن الآخر لدلالة الأول عليه. منهج بدر الدين بن جماعة في كتابه " كشف المعاني" واضح محدد، فهو يتناول الآيات المتشابهة في كل سورة ، بدءا بفتاتحة الكتاب وانتهاء بسورة الناس.
