تعتبر النظريات الأساس الذي ينطلق منه الواقع العملي، فالنظرية الجيدة تساعدنا على معرفة ما نبحث عنه في الواقع وترتيب أحداثه، وماذا نتوقع في المستقبل وإلى أين نمضي، فالنظريات موجودة في العلوم كافة ومنها الإرشاد النفسي.
ونظراً لكثرة نظريات الإرشاد النفسي فإننا سوف نتناول بعض النظريات فقط محاولين الإحاطة بأهم ما جاءت به هذه النظريات، مشيرين إلى أن العرض الذي سار عليه هذا الكتاب وصفي بالدرجة الاولى، وأن كل نظرية قد أعدها باحث أو أكثر، قد وُضعت في إطارها العام، وبينت الطرق والأساليب المتعددة التي يتبعها المرشد النفسي لتحقيق عملية الإرشاد، وتتمتع كل نظرية بالمعرفة والعلم ووجهة نظر وإتجاه يمكن أن نفيد منه.
ولا يقتصر عمل المرشد النفسي على إتباع نظرية واحدة، بل لا بد له من الإطلاع على نظريات أخرى والإفادة منها في عمله الإرشادي أو العلاجي، ولم يكن هدفنا في هذا الكتاب أن نقدم نقداً أو نتبنى نظرية محددة، أو نحاول تطوير نظرية معينة بل هدفنا النقل الصادق لأفكار كل نظرية وأهدافها وتقنياتها وإيجابياتها وسلبياتها.
أما بنية الكتاب، فقد اتخذ كل فصل من فصوله الشكل الذي اتخذته الفصول الأخرى تقريباً، وحاول المؤلف تنظيم عرض كل نظرية بطريقة تحقق قدراً من تنظيم العرض وتبسيطه، دون أن يؤثر ذلك على تكامل كل نظرية، مع مراعاة التسلسل التاريخي قدر الإمكان، بحيث يستطيع الطالب والباحث عقد المقارنات بين النظريات المختلفة، وهذا مفيد جداً لفهم محتويات كل نظرية.
