قام باشو برحلة على قدميه استمرت مئة وخمسين يوماً، وقطع خلالها نحو ثلاثمئة كيلومتر، وقد دوَّن هذه الرحلة في كتابه "الدرب الضيق إلى أوكو".
حدث هذا قبل ثلاثمئة سنة، حين كان معدل المسافة التي يقطعها المسافرون يوماً نحو 5 كيلومتر، وهذا يدل بوضوح على أن باشو كان ينعم بساقين قويتين جداً، وهو يومئذ في الأربعين من عمره.
واليوم، ومع تطور وسائل النقل بكل أنواعها، فإن السفر يميل إلى التوجه بخط مستقيم تماماً، وفق كل إعتبار؛ لذلك، يستحيل علينا تقريباً أن نتصور نوع الرحلة التي قام بها باشو "منساقاً مع الغيوم والجداول، مستريحاً تحت الأشجار وفوق الصخور الجرداء".
في جبال الصيف ركعت أمام قبقابه العالي، ثم بدأتُ رحلتي حالاً.
