في 1689، قام ماتسو باشو (1644-1694) بصحبة صديقه كاوي سوراً (1649-1710) برحلة استغرقت خمسة أشهر. وقد بدأ الرحلة انطلاقاً من إيدو (طوكيو الحالية) في نهاية الشهر الثالث من العام نفسه، ومضى شمالاً وصولاً إلى هيرايزومي في رايكوزين (إيواتي الحالية)، ثم انتقل إلى بحر اليابان، وارتحل باتجاه الجنوب الغربي على امتداد الساحل. وعندما وصل إلى ميناء تسوروجا، الواقع شمالي كيوتو، انعطف في اتجاه الجنوب الشرقي. وانتهت رحلته في أوجاكي، في مينو (جيفو الحالية) حيث وصل في الحادي والعشرين أو الثالث والعشرين من الشهر الثامن من العام نفسه.
شملت هذه الرحلة الشاقة قطع 1985 كيلو مترا أو 1233 ميلاً، أي ما يعادل على وجه التقريب المسافة من طرف فلوريدا الجنوبي إلى كونيتيكوت. والصورة القلمية المعروفة باسم "أوكو نوهوسوميتشي" المترجمة هنا تحت عنوان "الطريق الضيق إلى داخل البلاد" هي وصف باشو لهذه الرحلة. وعلى الرغم من أن هذه الصورة القلمية موجزة، إلا أنها تعد من بين الأعمال التي تحظى بأقصى قدر من الاحتفاء في الأدب الياباني.
