موضوع هذه الرسالة هو "التعايش السلمي بين المسلمين وغيرهم داخل دولة واحدة" أما هدفها فهو معرفة الهدي الإسلامي على وجه صحيح في معاملة المسلمين لغيرهم في كل مجالات الحياة. وفي الوقت ذاته تصحيح المفاهيم الخاطئة التي تكونت لدى الأفراد حول التسامح الديني وعلاقته السلمية بين المسلمين وغيرهم كذلك إبراز مزايا الدين الإسلامي على سائر الديانات والنظم في ضمان الحياة الكريمة المطمئنة للبشرية جمعاء وكيف إن سيادة الإسلام هو السبيل للخلاص مما عليه المسلمون من تقهقر وفقدان العزة ومما عليه البشرية من شقاء وتعاسة ولمعرفة الهدى الإسلامي فيما يتناوله الموضوع تعين على الباحث "سور حمن هدايات" الرجوع إلى مصدر الإسلام وهو القرآن الكريم وصحاح السنة، مع الاستعانة بكتب التراث والاستفادة من كتابات المعاصرين في المواطن التي تستسيغ ذلك والمحاولة قدر المستطاع لإبراز موقفه من بين الآراء الراهنة المسجلة كذا محل الاتفاق بينها.
ولمعرفة الأحداث التاريخية وتلمس الأوضاع الراهنة رجع إلى بعض كتب السير والتاريخ المعتمدة والكتب التي تعالج الأوضاع الراهنة مع الاستفادة في كتب المقالات ومقولات غير المسلمين على سبيل الاستشهاد والمحاولة. لإعطاء تفسير لكل ذلك. كما لا يقتصر التناول على سرد المعلومات، ومعرفة الوضع والمشكلة بل ويعقب ذلك محاولة البحث عن الحل والجواب.
