إخوان الصفاء وخلان الوفاء جماعة سرية، وجدت بمدينة البصرة في النصف الثاني من القرن الرابع الهجري والعاشر الميلادي، وقد نجحوا أيما نجاح في اتجاههم إلى إخفاء أشخاصهم عن معظم معاصريهم وعمن جاءوا بعدهم، ورغم اتجاههم إلى التكلم والمدارة إلا أنهم بثوا الرسائل الحاوية لمعلوماتهم أينما استطاعوا، فوجدت في المساجد، وفي حوانيت الوراقين وتناقش في محتواها الفلاسفة والعلماء في مجالسهم العامة والخاصة بالبصرة وبغداد وغيرها.
وحملها البعض، فيما يروى، غلى بلاد الأندلس وينتمي إخوان الصفاء لدائرة الفلاسفة، إلا أنهم تحيزوا عليهم بعدم اكتفائهم بالفلسفة والإنتاج الفلسفي نهاية لاجتهادهم في مجال المعرفة. فالناظر في رسائلهم يلمح بوضوح أن التربية والتعليم جزء لا يتجزأ من بنائهم الفلسفي والركيزة الأساسية التي اعتمدوا عليها في محاولة ترجمة فكرهم إلى واقع، فسعوا لإيجاد جماعة من الشباب عالمة خيرة فاضلة ذكية مستبصرة، وإعدادهم على هذه الصورة ليكونوا رجالاً عاملين في "دولة الخير المنتظرة".
وفي هذا الكتاب بحث يهدف إلى عرض وتحليل فلسفة إخوان الصفاء التربوية، لذا كان لا بد للباحثة من الرجوع إلى جماعتهم في إطارها الاجتماعي الذي نشأت فيه وتكتسب فيه أيضاً معالمها وتستمد منه أهدافها وفيه تتحد وبالتالي وظيفتها ومسؤولياتها. هذا ما تناولته الباحثة في الباب الأول من البحث بالتفصيل، من زاوية أخرى فإن مسلمات هذا البحث أن هناك علاقة قوية بين آراء المفكر أو الفيلسوف التربوية وفلسفة العامة، لذا اتجه الباحثة في الباب الثاني إلى عرض الأسس الفلسفية لآراء الإخوان التربوية ودراستها أما الباب الثالث فكان فيه عودة لفلسفتهم لاستشفاف رأيهم في الإنسان وعلاقته بربه وبالكون المحيط به، وبمجتمعه الذي يعيش فيه، وأيضاً عن تصورهم لطبيعة هذا الإنسان، والقيم التي تحكم علاقته بغيره، وبالوسيلة التي تجعله يعرف كل هذا أي نظرية المعرفة.
وفي هذا أحاطه بالأسس والمبادئ التي تعتمد عليها تربيتهم ومن البديهي أن الإخوان لم يعيشوا في فراغ في مجتمع له تراث الفكري إلى جانب ما يموج به من تيارات فكرية وافدة، وعلى هذا فالبحث لم يغفل المحاولات التي سبقتهم في هذا المجال الفلسفي، خاصة وإن كان ذلك في حدود ضيقة للغاية كي لا يخرج البحث عن الهدف الموضوع له أصلاً.
