الكتاب لا يصور الحياة المصرية فى عصر "أخناتون" فحسب, لكنه يصور الحياة فى العالم الذى عرفه المصريون فى ذلك الوقت. فبطل الكتاب الذى يتحدث إليك حديثا مباشرا, لأنه يقص عليك حياته, قد اضطر إلى أن يكون أخا سفر, جواب آفاق. فهو ينتقل فى مصر, ثم يتجاوز حدودها إلى فلسطين وسوريا, ثم يمضى إلى "بابل" ثم إلى جزيرة أقرطيش أو "كريت".
وهو عاشر حكام هذه البلاد كلها, كما يتصل بأهلها اتصالا دقيقا, ويقص علينا من سير أولئك وهؤلاء, وأنبائهم, أطرافا أيسر ما توصف به أنها تخلب وتروع.. دهشت حين أقبل على ذات يوم, الأستاذ "حامد القصبى" ومعه ترجمة عربية لهذه القصة, نقلها من اللغة الإنجليزية الأمريكية.
دهشت, لأنى لم أكن أنتظر أن أراها فى لغتنا, ودهشت لأن الذى يحمل إلى ترجمتها مهندس, أنفق حياته فى فنون الهندسة على اختلافها, وفى شئون وزارة الأشغال, له مشاركة حسنة فى الأدب.. وكان أشد ما راعنى حين قرأت فصولا من هذه القصة أن اللغة التى نقل إليها الكتاب, ليست أقل جمالا, وروعة أداء, من التراجم الأخرى التى قرأت فيها الكتاب. وقد وفق المترجم إلى أن يحسن النقل إحسانا, لا زيادة فيه لمستزيد, وكأنه سبق المترجم الأمريكى إلى نفس الكاتب الفنلندى, فعبر عما فيها تعبيرا صادقا دقيقا.
