تطورت دلالات الألفاظ ظاهرة لا ريب فيها في اللغات البشرية، وفعاله فيها ظاهر لعين الناظر، فمن يتبصّر في تراث اسلافنا ولغة العصر ير ذلك رأي العين والعقل. وتطوّر الدلالات يعكس تطور الفكر والثقافة والحضارة، والتاريخ له كشف للمجهول، لكن السبيل إليه عزيز، فهذه سنون بعد سنين ما قام فيها رجال ولا هيئة بهذا المشروع مشروع المعجم التاريخي للغة العربية إلا وهم ناكصون، وقائلون بعدئذ: لو أن اللغويين الأقدمين سجلوا في تصانيفهم ما طرأ على الألفاظ من تطور في دلالاتها لكفونا المشقّة. والصحيح أنهم سجلوا من التطورات أقدمها، تلك التي ليست لها شواهد فصيحة صحيحة تخبر عنها إلا قليلاً، ومن هنا تعلم أهمية الوقوف على أقوالهم وجمع شتاتها، مع التحقيق فيها.
ومن المعدودين في هذا الميدان اللغوي الشهير أحمد بن فارس (ت 395ه) في معجمه الشهير "مقاييس اللغة"؛ فإن مرامه لرد ألفاظ اللغة إلى أصول كلية معدودة هداه إلى رصد طارىء التطور. لكنه لم يقم البراهين على صحة أحكامه وإن كان يسوقها في الغالب كما تساق الحقائق بمجانبته عبارات الإحتمال. وإذا كان علم اليقين مفتقراً للدليل، وهو في هذه الحال الشواهد الصحيحة وآرار العلماء الثقات، فلا بد من الوقوف على هذين المرجعين ليصحّ الجزم أو الترجيح.
ولبيان ذلك اخترنا ثمانية ألفاظ هي: "الأسير" و "الثُكَل" عينة لاتساع الدلالة، و "الجارية" و "الحج" عينة لضيق الدلالة، و "الكبش" و "الأسل" عينة لانتقال الدلالة بالتشبيه، و "الأذن" و "البدن" عينة لانتقال الدلالة بالمجاز. فأقوى الأقوال وأقمنها بالقبول تلك التي عليها أكثر أهل اللغة، وصدقتها الشواهد الوثقى.
