إن تقدير الإسلام للعلم أمر لا يكاد يخفى، فأولى آيات القرآن نزولاً أمرت بالقراءة التي هي وسيلة من وسائل التعلم، وأول قسم جاء في القرآن كان القسم بالقلم، ليتأكد اهتمام الإسلام بالعلم ووسائله في حياة المسلمين، ولئن كانت للعلم وسائله وأسبابه التي لا يستغنى عنها، فإن أهمها: وجود العلماء الذين هم أوعيته وناقلوه. وتدلنا السنة على أن غياب هؤلاء العلماء إيذان بحلول الجهل وتصدر الجهلاء للأمر، ومن ثم يقع الفساد والاضطراب، ولأجل هذا أعلى الإسلام من قدر العلماء، وبوأهم مكانة ساحقة، وجعل تكريمهم وتوفيرهم فرضاً لازماً على كل مسلم، ولكن يلاحظ في السنوات الأخيرة ابتعاد المسلمين عن توقير علمائهم وبالمقابل تعالت بعض الأصوات لتنال منهم، وهذا ما دعا المؤلف "طلعت محمد عفيفي" إلى وضع هذه الدراسة المختصرة والتي يكشف من خلال فصولها النقاب عن خطورة هذه المسألة (التطاول على العلماء وعن الأضرار المترتبة عليها، وليحيط المؤلف بجميع جوانب موضوعه بدأ دراسته بمقدمة بيّن فيها مكانة أهل العلم في الإسلام، ودعوته (أي الإسلام) إلى توفيرهم، ومظاهر هذا التوفير، ونماذج عملية على توقير العلماء لتكون نبراساً يستضاء به في فهم مكانة العلماء في الدين الإسلامي، وبعد ذلك انتقل إلى صلب الموضوع ليتحدث عن أسباب هذه الظاهرة المستجدة وإلى كيفية التغلب عليها، وعن الحلّ الذي يجب على الإنسان اتخاذه في حال اكتشف خطأ من بعض العلماء.
