"أنا يهودي شرقي أوروبي (أوست يودي)، ووطننا حيث يرقد موتانا". هكذا قال المليونير هنري بلومفيلد، في رواية "فندق السافوا" لجوزيف روث، قالها حين كان يزور قبر أبية جيشيل بلومفيلد. تجمع هذه العبارة بين جنباتها التاريخ الكامل "ليهود شرق أوروبا" (الذين يشار إليهم أحياناً باسم "أوستيودن". لا يشير مصطلح "أوست يودن" ببساطة إلى "اليهود الموجودين في شرق أوروبا" لأنه رغم تشكلهم كنمط مميز هناك فإنهم موزعون في جميع أنحاء العالم. لقد تركوا وراءهم موتاهم في كثير من البلاد، وغالباً ما ظلت الذاكرة وظنهم الوحيد.
