يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يشرح أصول وآليات أحد أهم أحداث هذا القرن وهو سقوط الأنظمة الشيوعية في أوربا الشرقية، ولا يقتصر عرض هذا الحدث على مجرد التوصيف التاريخي، بل يتطرق إلى تحليله مركزاً على خمس أطروحات رئيسية حول تاريخ الشيوعية في أوربا الشرقية والمجتمع المدني الصاعد وآليات الثورة في أوربا الشرقية على النظم الشيوعية والتحول الديمقراطي، وقضية الصراعات العراقية التي بدأت تطل في المنطقة بوجهها القبيح.
