الثورة الفرنسية ثورة تشترك مع باقي الثورات في خواصها، فهي لم تزد عن كونها انقلاباً في النظم التي كانت معروفة في فرنسا قبل وقوع الثورة، ولكن تمتاز الثورة الفرنسية بأنها لم تكن ثورة سياسية ترتب عليها انقلاب في حكومة فرنسا فحسب، ولكنها كانت ثورة سياسية اجتماعية اقتصادية، فأما كونها ثورة سياسية فلأنها انتهت بقلب نظام الحكم الملكي في فرنسا إلى نظام جمهوري.
وأما كونها ثورة إجتماعية فلأنها أدت إلى إلغاء امتيازات الأشراف ورجال الدين، ومحت الفوارق التي كانت قائمة بين طبقات الشعب الفرنسي، وجعلت فرنسا كلها طبقة واحدة بعد أن كانت ثلاث طبقات متباينة، وأما كونها ثورة إقتصادية فلأنها غيرت نظام الضرائب والرسوم الجمركية، وألغت نظام الإحتكار، ومحت القيود التي كانت على الصناعات، وانتزعت أملاك الكنيسة وجعلتها ملكاً للأمة.
لعل هذه الصفة الجامعة من بين صفات الثورة الفرنسية هي أهم ما جعلها تنفرد في التاريخ بتلك المكانة التي تشغلها؛ فالتاريخ حافل بأخبار الثورات، ولا يكاد يخلو تاريخ أي دولة من ذكر ثورة انتابتها، ولكنك لا تتحدث عن الثورة أو عن أمر وقع في عصر الثورة إلا وينصرف الحديث على الأكثر إلى الثورة الفرنسية، وهي ما يدور حوله هذا الكتاب، مستعرضاً أحداثها على مدار سبعة أبواب هي كالتالي: (الباب الأول: تمهيدات عامة، الباب الثاني: أسباب الثورة الفرنسية، الباب الثالث: الثورة والقضاء على العهد القديم، الباب الرابع: الجمعية الوطنية تضع الدستور، الباب الخامس: الحكومة الدستورية، الباب السادس: الجمهورية، الباب السابع: الديركتوار "حكومة الإدارة").
