حصل على دبلوم الدراسات العليا في اللغة العربية وآدابها من كلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية بفاس سنة 1987.
كما أحرز على دكتوراه الدولة في الآداب من جامعة السوربون بباريس سنة 1990.
يشتغل أستاذا جامعيا.
بدأ أحمد المديني النشر سنة 1967 بجريدة العلم.
التحق باتحاد كتاب المغرب سنة 1972.
يتوزع إنتاجه بين القصة القصيرة، الشعر، النقد الأدبي والترجمة.
وقد نشر أعماله بعدة صحف ومجلات: العلم، المحرر، الاتحاد الاشتراكي، النهار (لبنان)، السفير (لبنان)، الثورة، الجمهورية (العراق)، أنفاس، آفاق أقلام، الآداب، الطريق، تحولات، كتابات معاصرة، الكرمل،

إن الشاغل الأول لهذا الكتاب، هو محاولة حصر وفحص وضبط نوع وإيقاع التحولات التي عرفتها الرواية العربية، مغرباً ومشرقاً، من خلال نصوص مفردة، وذات تمثلية، في العقد الأخير خاصة، وهي متنوعة شكلاً وبيئاتٍ ومنازعَ، كل هذا بعيداً عن زعم الشمول، ولا استخلاص نظرية حصرية. إذ ما نتوخاه هو رسمُ سمات العمل السردي الفنية والبنائية، بوصفه جنساً أدبياً قام على أُسُس محددة، وتواترت إعادة بنائه.
الأمر الذي يفيد أن كتابنا يختص بالنوع على مدار ومظاهر ودرجات تحولاته، فهذا هو المعوّل عليه، وسواه يأتي تابعاً وحاشية، علماً بأننا لا نبخس طبيعة ونوعية الخطابات، ولا المعاني والدلالات المبثوثة في النصوص، نعتبرها من جوهر القول ومؤسِّسة له. ولذلك استخدمنا في هذا الكتاب/القراءة، آليات تحليل ومناهج ومفاهيم قرينة بالشكل الفني وتتعداه إلى الخطاب، ولا نخفي ركوننا أحياناً إلى الذوق، المكتسب بمَلكة قراءة لا تفتأ تتغير وتتجدد، وهي تتلاءم مع نصوص في صيرورة. هي منتميةٌ إلى بيئات اجتماعية وثقافية متباينة، وإن كانت تجمعها لحمة هموم متقاربة، ونزوع للخلاص من أزمات ذاتية ومصيرية، ومن هنا أهمية درس المضمون بوصفه بنية عميقة، تؤشر بدورها إلى تحوّل في الرؤية، تمثّل أساساً بُعدَ تشرّب تقاليد الرواية الواقعية بمنظوراتها، في الانزياح عنها باتجاه أفق تخييل وصنعة سردية بديلين، وهذا هو التجلي الأبرز للرواية العربية المعاصرة.
