ولد محمد التابعي محمد وهبة في بورسعيد في خليج الجميل في (18 مايو 1896 - 24 ديسمبر 1976)، صحفي مصري، أسس مجلة آخر ساعة ولقب بأمير الصحافة.
وقد تزوج من زوزو حمدي الحكيم بدأ محمد التابعى عام 1924 بكتابة مقالات فنية في جريدة الأهرام تحت توقيع حندس.
كان التابعي في البداية يكتب في روزاليوسف بدون توقيع، فقد كان يعمل موظفا في البرلمان المصري.
وكادت مقالاته السياسية تحدث أزمة سياسية بين الدستوريين والسعديين.
استقال التابعي من وظيفته الحكومية وتفرغ للكتابة في روزاليوسف وكان ثمنها في ذلك الوقت خمسة مليمات مصرية، وتسببت مقالات التابعي السياسية القوية في زيادة توزيعها حتى أصبح ثمنها قرش صاغ.
أسس التابعي مجلة أخر ساعة الشهيرة عام 1934 وشارك في تأسيس جريدة المصري مع محمود أبو الفتح وكريم ثابت كما كان محمد التابعى هو الصحفى المصري الوحيد الذى رافق العائلة الملكية في رحلتها الطويلة لأوروبا عام 1937 وكان شاهدا ومشاركا للعديد من الأحداث التاريخية آنذاك.
اشتهر التابعي بأنه صحفي يتحقق من معلوماته قبل نشرهاوكان يحصل علي الأخبار من مصادرها مهما كانت.
وكان أسلوبه ساخرا عندما يهاجم.
لكنه كان رشيقا مهذبا وأصبح مدرسة خاصة في الكتابة الصحفية.
من ضمن أسلوب التابعى الساخر أن أطلق أسماء هزلية على بعض الشخصيات السياسية المعروفة، وكان يكفى أن يشير التابعى في مقال إلى الاسم الهزلى ليتعرف القراء على الشخصية المقصودة.
