شاع عن المتنبي أنه من حكماء الشعراء، وربما أدى ذلك إلى الاعتقاد بأنه يستملي العقل أكثر مما يستوحى الخيال الذي يعتمد عليه أكثر مما يعتمد على غيره، فهل كان ذلك حقًا؟ هذا ما يحاول البحث الإجابة عنه. وقد خرج البحث في فصول ثلاثة: أبرز الفصل الأول منها مراحل حياة الشاعر مركزًا على إظهار ترجمة الشعر عنها، مع إبراز مقومات الشخصية وأثرها في الشعر، وكان الفصل الثاني عن تتبع التصوير البياني في سائر الأغراض الشعرية التي نظم فيها المتنبي، وذلك لبيان مدى الاستعانة بالخيال في تأدية هذه الأغراض، أما الفصل الثالث فقد وضع فيه الخيال الشعري في ميزان النقد الأدبي من جوانب متعددة، تبرز مكانه، وتحدد نصيب موهبة الشاعر من النواحي الإيجابية فيه.
