تتسم اللغة الإنجليزية بظاهرة تشكل عقبة كأداة للمترجم من الإنجليزية إلى العربية، وكثيراً ما يلجأ المترجم العربي إلى المعاجم الثنائية باحثاً عنها فلا يجد ضآلته. تعرف هذه الظاهرة بالفعال العبارية (phrasal verbs)، وهي تجمعات لبعض الأفعال المقترنة بحروف الجر (prepositions) أو الأحوال (adverbs) وجزء كبير من هذه الأفعال على قدر كبير من الاصطلاحية (idiomaticity) ولا يمكن للمترجم العربي بحال من الأحوال أن يتنبأ بمعناه، ومن ثم فمن الصعوبة أن نجد المقابل المناسب لها.
من أجل المترجم العربي أعد هذا المعجم وهو من المعاجم المتميزة الشاملة في هذا المجال. هو معجم جديد من نوعه يجمع بين شقين: معجم أحادي اللغة الإنجليزية تأليف Tom Mcarthur &Beryl Atkins يشرح الأفعال العبارية في إطار اللغة الإنجليزية التي تبدأ منها الترجمة ويساعد المترجم على فهمها، وشق آخر عربي يساعد على التعبير عن هذه الأفعال باللغة العربية.
يحوي المعجم المقابل النصي للفعل العباري المستخدم في النص الإنجليزي لا مقابلاً منزوعاً من السياق ويحدد المتلازم اللفظي الذي يحدد المعنى ومن ثم المقابل العربي الصحيح، كما يزود المترجم بعدد كبير من المترادفات لنقل ظلال المعاني ودرجات من جموح العاطفة وشدتها أو تحديد مستوى الاستعمال.
