الفعل قسم مهم من أقسام الكلام على المستويين النحوي والصرفي؛ فمن الناحية النحوية يُعدّ الفعل ركناً مهماً في بناء الجملة، وهو في العربية من أقوى العوامل اللفظية على الإطلاق، يرفع فاعلاً وينصب مفعولاً، ومن أوّليات النحو العربي ومسلّماته أن العمل أصل في الأفعال.
إن منهجية هذا الكتاب فهي على النحو التالي: "كان لا بد من تهميد أتعرض فيه لمفهوم اللغة وتعريفاتها وسماتها، وأبرز المدارس اللسانية الحديثة التي درستها، مبرزاً دور اللسانيات التطبيقية في هذا المجال، وموقع الدراسات التقابلية من ذلك كله"، "وبعد التمهيد كان لا بد من الدخول في الموضوع الرئيس، فرأيت أن تكون البداية في دراسة أشكال الأفعال في اللغتين، فجاءت مادة الفصل الاول متناولة للقالب والبنية، وموقع الفعل من بقية أقسام الكلم، وموضحة بنية الكم والكيف التي تخص الأفعال في اللغتين".
"وبعد دراسة الشكل تجيء بالطبع دراسة الوظيفة، وفي هذا جاء الفصل الثاني متناولاً وطيفة الفعل المطلق من خلال ثلاثة أقسام رئيسية، اشتملت على الوظيفة العامة، والوظيفة الصرفيّة، والوظيفة الدلالية التي منها الزمن والجهة"، "ولأن وظيفة الفعل المطلق تستدعي وظيفة الفعل المقيد فقد جاء الفصل الثالث متناولاً هذا الموضوع من خلال ثلاثة أقسام رئيسية هي: الإستفهام والنفي وجهات الزمن".
وقد غلب على جهدي في هذا الكتاب منهج تحليلي داخلي يقوم إبتداء على دراسة النصوص والشواهد في اللغتين والمقابلة بينها، ثم إصطفاء أنسيها، وإسقاط ما لم يكن كذلك، ثم عرضها مرتبة بترتيب منطقي لا أنظر فيها إلى مواضعها في أصولها، ولكن إلى تناغمها وترابطها بحيث يسوق السابق اللاحق، وتحقق مجتمعة الغرض المقصود من إيرادها.
