إن نص "في حكم الأمراء" ضروري للتعرف على الفكر السياسي للقديس توما الأكويني، رمز الكاثوليكية، ومؤسس اللاهوت المسيحي على العقل ولا سيما أنه النص الوحيد الخالص في السياسة لتوما الأكويني ولكن لا ينبغي الاعتماد عليه وحده في التعرف على مجمل الآراء السياسية للقديس، فلابد أن يوضع في سياق غيره من النصوص، بإضافة لسياق عصر الأكويني نفسه، فضلاً عن ربطة باستمرار مع السياسة الأرسطية والتي تعتبر الأساس الذي عول عليه الأكويني لتشييد نسقه السياسى، فلقد حاول التوفيق بين الفلسفة السياسية الأرسطية واللاهوت المسيحي، وكانت محاولته تلك أيسر بطبيعة الحال من محاولته التوفيق بين ميتافيزيقا أرسطو والدين المسيحي. وعلى الرغم من أنه يمكن اعتبار الفلسفة السياسية الأرسطية الأساس الذي اعتمد عليه الأكويني في بناء نسقه السياسي إلا أنه لم يكن مقلداً ولا تابعاً لأرسطو.
