يسعى هذا الكتاب الى البحث عن جذور التعددية الديموقراطية في الاسلام الحديث ويتناول من اجل ذلك المفاهيم الحديثة والقضايا المتعلقة بالكرامة الانسانية. ويتناول فكرة التدين الانساني والكوني الذي يسعى الى اكتشاف المعايير الاخلاقية اللازمة لإقامة نظام عادل ومتناغم في الارض وعليه فان التأمل الاخلاقي هو مركز البحث عن لغة كونية للكرامة الانسانية التي يمكنها التوفيق بين تنوع التعددية الحقيقية ان احترام الاسلام للاخر يقدم افتراضيات قادرة على تأسيس خطاب عام لتعددية دينية متوافقة تماماً مع القرآن والسنة. ولذلك يتتبع هذا الكتاب مسارين للبحث فأما المسار الاول فهو تناول تفاسير القرآن حتى يمكن اكتشاف رؤية المفسرين القدماء للنص القرآني فيما يتعلق بالقضايا المهمة في عصرنا الحديث واما المسار الثاني، ففيه تحليل لهذه التفاسير على ضوء النقاشات الحديثة بين المسلمين من مختلف المدارس الفكرية واستكشاف مغزاها لقضايا التعددية الدينية وحرية الضمير وحرية الاعتقاد والوضع الشرعي للأقليات الدينية في الوحي الاسلامي.
