في هذا الكتاب دراسات وبحوث في موضوع اللسانيات ونحو النص، ففي الباب الأول، الذي جاء بعنوان مقدمةً في اللسانيات، أربعة فصول تنتظم جميعاً في بناءٍ واحدٍ متماسك، مطلعة تقديمٌ تاريخيّ، وتوطئةٌ وجيزة، حول المدارس اللسانية المعاصرة، ويليه فصلٌ مكثفٌ عن اللغة والدرْس الصوتي، وآخر عن اللغة والنظام الصرفي، وثالثٌ عن اللغة والنحو.
أما الباب الثاني، فيتألف من ثلاثة فصول، يجمعها محورٌ واحدٌ هو الدراسات الصوتية، وقد جاءت تطبيقاً مفصّلاً لبعض ما جاء في الباب الأول على وجه الإجمال، فالفصل الموسوم بعنوان "صوتيات ابن سينا في ضوء علم اللسان الحديث" توضيحٌ لإرتباط الصوت بالمعنى، ودرْسٌ للأصوات من الزاوية الفسيولوجية، فيه إنصاف بيّن لبعض النابغين من الباحثين العرب في الصوتيات، وفي الثاني "مذهب سيبويه" والثالث "المقطع العروضي".
وأما ثالث الأبواب في هذا الكتاب، فيحتوي ثلاثة فصول، وفي الفصل الأول من هذا الباب يتجاوز الكلام على النحو إطار الجملة، أو البنية الصغرى، إلى إطار أكبر هو البنية الكبرى، أو الفقرة أو النص، فكان المبحث - إذن - حول ما يعرف بقواعد النص عند فان ديك، ورقية حسن، وهاليدي، وبيوغراند، ودرسلر، وغيرهم... من اللغويين.
وحتى لا يكون الأمر مقصوراً على الغربّيين، وموقوفاً على آراء المعاصرين دون المتقدمين، تطرّق الفصل الثاني من الباب الثالث، وهو الموسوم "بقواعد التماسك النحوي عند عبد القاهر الجرجاني" لإنصاف اللغويين القدماء، والتنبيه على ما قدّموهُ من أفكارٍ، وآراء، توطّيءُ لقواعد النصّ، ونحوه، أما الفصل الثالث فهو دراسة تطبيقية قصيرة تستخدم مفاهيم علم النص في تناول قصيدة للشاعرة فدوى طوقان وهي قصيدة هل تذكُرُ؟...
