تناول هذا الكتاب دراسة التاريخ السياسي المعاصر للعالم العربي، بحيث ضم أبرز الأحداث الواقعة على كل بلد من بلاد الوطن العربي التي يزخر تاريخها المعاصر بالعديد من المحطات الهامة والأحداث الجسام، والتي شكلت نقطة تحول على جميع الأصعدة في الساحات العربية. بحيث عرف العهد المعاصر للدول العربية تطورا دوريا يكمن في تعاقب التخلف والاستعمار والمقاومة، وظل طول حقبة تمتد زهاء خمسة قرون يتخبط في هذه الحلقة المفرغة. فارتبط تاريخ العالم العربي المعاصر بتاريخ أوروبا الغربية ثم الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، حيث لعبت العوامل الخارجية دورا لا يستهان به في السيرورة الحديثة للمجتمعات العربية، وأصبح مصير العرب يقرر في عواصم القوى العظمى وفقا لما تقتضيه مصالحها.
غير أن الشعوب العربية رفضت الاحتلال الأجنبي وعملت على التصدي له ومقاومته دفاعا عن الحرية والكرامة والأرض. فعرفت البلدان العربية المحتلة حركات مقاومة مسلحة في ظروف استفحال التناقضات السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية بين القوى الاستعمارية والشعوب العربية، وتغير الظروف الدولية ونمو الوعي الوطني.
