عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

هناك العديد ممن يعتقدون أن البشر خراف، في حين يعتقد آخرون أنهم ذئاب. ويستطيع كلا الجانبين حشد العديد من الحجج الجيدة لإثبات آرائهم. إذ لا يحتاج أولئك الذين يقولون إن البشر خراف سوى للإشارة الى أنه يمكن بسهولة التأثير عليهم ليقوموا بتنفيذ ما يطلب منهم فعله، حتى لو كان ذلك مؤذياً لهم؛ وأنهم يتبعون قادتهم الى الحروب التي لا تجلب لهم سوى الدمار، وأنهم مستعدون لتصديق أي نوع من الكلام السخيف إذا قدم لهم بطاقة كافية، وكان مدعوماً بسلطة ما. ألا نرى عدم إنسانية الإنسان اتجاه إخوته في كل مكان: في الحرب الوحشية، في القتل والاغتصاب، في الاستغلال الوحشي للضعيف من قبل القوي، وفي حقيقة أن أنات المعذبين وآهاتهم لم تعد تلقى إلا آذاناً صماء وقلوباً قاسية؟ لقد قادت كل هذه الحقائق الى استنتاج أن "الانسان ذئب لأخيه الانسان". وقادت الكثيرين منا اليوم الى افتراض ان الانسان شرير ومدمر بطبيعته، وأنه قاتل لا يمكن حرمانه من متعته المفضلة الا بتخويفه من قتلة آخرين أشد بأساً منه.
بمثل هذه الأفكار يمور كتاب إيريك فروم (جوهر الإنسان) وهو يحلل أشكال العنف المختلفة والنرجسسية الفردية والاجتماعية، والقيود السفاحية، والحرية الحتمية والاختيار.
