قال عنه الحافظ ابن كثير - رحمه الله - في البداية والنهاية: " المشهور بالتصانيف الكثيرة، النافعة، الشائعة، الذائعة في الرقائق وغيرها، وكان صدوقاً، حافظاً، ذا مروءة ".

تطلعت النفوس إلى هذا الأمل الحلو.. وودوا لو أحيطوا علما بصفة الجنة وأشجارها، وطعام أهل الجنة وشرابهم، ولباسهم وفراشهم، وقصورهم ودرجاتهم، ولقد كثرت المرويات عن الجنة ونعيمها، وتفاوتت صحة وضعفا مما جعل الإمام الحافظ العلامة "ابن أبي الدنيا" يعكف على جمعها بسنده، ويقدم لنا أكثر من ثلثمائة وخمسين حديثاً تتناول كل ما يريد المسلم أن يعرفه عن الجنة التي أعدها الله للطائعين.
ولقد سمي كتابه هذا (كتاب صفة الجنة، وما أعد الله لأهلها من النعيم)، وكتاب هذا شأنه يعد موسوعة في كل ما يتعلق بالجنة لا غنى عنه لكل من يهمهم الأمر، وهل فينا من لا يهمه الأمر؟!، وتتجلى أهمية الكتاب إذا علمنا أن ابن أبي الدنيا نقل إلينا فيما رواه بسنده أقوال الصحابة والمفسرين فيما يتعلق بالجنة.. إلى جانب أحاديث الرسول "صلى الله عليه وسلم" ولقد بذلت جهدي في العمل على تخريج هذه الأحاديث جميعها مبينا رأي رجال الحديث فيما سندا ومتنا ليتجلى وجه الصواب، وليكون المسلم على بينة مما روى.
